📌 Quick Answer · De Quervain's & Carpal Tunnel

De Quervain's tenosynovitis is irritation of the two tendons that run along the thumb side of the wrist. It hurts when you grip, lift or move the thumb. Carpal tunnel syndrome is pressure on the median nerve at the front of the wrist. It causes numbness and tingling in the thumb, index and middle fingers, often worse at night. Both are usually treated without surgery first: activity changes, a splint where useful, tendon or nerve gliding, manual therapy and graded strengthening. If they do not settle, a doctor may advise an injection or surgery. At Dynamics Mend, Sector 52 Noida, sessions cost ₹500 to ₹800.

Wrist pain is easy to ignore until it is not. You notice it lifting the pressure cooker, then holding your phone, then picking up your baby, and soon every grip has a sharp catch on the thumb side or a buzz of pins and needles in your fingers.

Two problems cause most of this: De Quervain's tenosynovitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. They feel different, they need different treatment, and a neck problem can imitate the tingling of carpal tunnel. So the first session is spent finding out which one you have.

Which One Do You Have?

De Quervain's

Tendon Pain on the Thumb Side

Pain and sometimes swelling at the base of the thumb, along the thumb side of the wrist. It is worst when you grip, lift, wring clothes or move the thumb. Tucking the thumb into your fist and bending the wrist towards the little finger usually reproduces it. Common in new mothers, heavy phone users and anyone doing repetitive gripping.

Carpal Tunnel

Nerve Pressure at the Front of the Wrist

Numbness, tingling or burning in the thumb, index, middle and half of the ring finger. Often wakes you at night or comes on while driving or holding the phone, and shaking the hand helps. Later it can cause clumsiness and dropping things. More common in pregnancy, diabetes, thyroid problems and jobs with forceful gripping or vibrating tools.

Some people have both, and a trapped nerve in the neck can produce similar tingling. That is why we always check the neck and the whole arm, not just the wrist.

How We Treat Wrist and Thumb Pain

01
Phase 01

Find the Real Cause

Clinical tests for De Quervain’s and carpal tunnel, a neck and nerve screen, and a grip strength check so progress can be compared session to session. If you already have a nerve conduction report, bring it.

02
Phase 02

Calm It Down

Changes to how you lift, grip and hold your phone, advice on a thumb splint or a night wrist splint where it helps, kinesio taping for support during the day, and ultrasound or IFT where useful.

03
Phase 03

Free It Up

Manual therapy and soft-tissue work for the forearm and thumb, wrist and carpal mobilisation, and tendon or median nerve gliding exercises you can repeat at home.

04
Phase 04

Make It Stronger

Graded thumb, wrist and grip strengthening, a desk setup that stops feeding the problem, and a safe return to gym, sport or baby care without a flare-up.

Wrist Pain After Pregnancy ("Mommy Thumb")

De Quervain's is so common in the first months after delivery that it has a nickname: mommy thumb. Lifting a baby with the thumb stretched wide and feeding positions held for long periods load the same two tendons, and fluid and hormonal changes around pregnancy can make them easier to irritate. Carpal tunnel symptoms are also common in pregnancy because of fluid retention, and often ease after delivery.

Many new mothers improve once we change how the baby is lifted and held, and add a simple splint or taping during the day. If it does not settle, we tell you when it is time to see a doctor about an injection. If you prefer, your sessions can be with a female physiotherapist. When Wrist Pain Needs a Doctor First

⚠️ Get medical help first if you notice any of these

  • Urgent, same-day assessment: pain after a fall onto the hand, especially in the hollow at the base of the thumb, which can be a scaphoid fracture that needs an X-ray
  • Urgent, same-day assessment: a hot, red, swollen wrist with fever
  • See a doctor soon: numbness that is constant rather than coming and going, or visible wasting of the muscle at the base of the thumb
  • Urgent, same-day assessment: tingling in both hands together with neck pain, balance problems or weakness in the legs
  • Urgent, same-day assessment: numbness that gets worse quickly after a wrist injury, fracture or plaster
  • Emergency, go to hospital: sudden numbness or weakness of the hand with a drooping face or slurred speech, which can be a stroke

These are uncommon, and we screen for them in the first visit. If your symptoms need a nerve conduction study or a hand surgeon’s opinion, we tell you and refer you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What patients with wrist and thumb pain ask us most.

1. Is De Quervain's the same as carpal tunnel?+
No. De Quervain's is irritation of two thumb tendons and causes pain on the thumb side of the wrist. Carpal tunnel is pressure on the median nerve and causes numbness and tingling in the fingers. They need different treatment, which is why the first assessment matters.
2. Will I need surgery for my wrist?+
Many mild to moderate cases improve with physiotherapy, activity changes and a splint. If they do not, a doctor may suggest a steroid injection. Surgery is considered when nerve compression is severe or constant, the thumb muscles start wasting, or symptoms do not improve after a proper trial of treatment, and we refer you to a hand specialist if that is the case.
3. How long does De Quervain's take to get better?+
Many people feel a clear difference within a few weeks once the aggravating grips are changed and the tendons are loaded correctly. Cases that have been going on for months usually take longer. We give you an honest estimate after the assessment.
4. Should I wear a splint?+
Often, yes. A thumb splint during the tasks that hurt helps De Quervain's, and a neutral wrist splint at night helps carpal tunnel. We advise which type and when to wear it, and avoid keeping the wrist locked up all day for weeks.
5. Can I keep working on my laptop and phone?+
Yes, with changes. We adjust your mouse and keyboard position, how you hold your phone and how often you break, so work stops aggravating the problem while it heals.
6. Does kinesio taping help wrist and thumb pain?+
It can reduce strain on the thumb tendons during the day and make gripping more comfortable. It supports the treatment but does not fix the problem on its own.
7. What does wrist pain treatment cost in Noida?+
Clinic sessions at Dynamics Mend are ₹500 to ₹800 including assessment, manual therapy, taping and exercises. Home visits in our Noida sectors start from ₹800.
8. I am a new mother with thumb pain. Can you help?+
Yes. Mommy thumb is very common and often settles once lifting and feeding positions are changed and the tendons are supported. You can ask for a female physiotherapist for your sessions, at the clinic or at home.
